FEATURE DOCUMENTARY - in production

In today’s film & television industry film tax incentives have become one of the primary factors in determining where a production will be filmed. Today film incentives are active in 36 states within the United States and Puerto Rico, and in over 20 different countries around the world including Canada, South Africa, Australia and New Zealand. THE REEL INCENTIVE is a documentary aimed at taking a closer look at the effectiveness of film tax incentives within the production industry as well as the economical and communal impact they have here in the United States.

Our production will follow a crew of storytellers as they visit with film community representatives, politicians, economic experts, and leaders of local non-profit trade organizations to help breakdown the different types of incentive programs and how they became state law. The project will visit 12 or more states in the U.S. that either previously had an incentive program, or currently have an active program in their state. We’ll also be traveling to California to speak with representatives at the AFCI Locations Show, and with the various guilds and unions that represent the film industry in the U.S. and around the world. These groups would include, but are not limited to, the Director’s Guild of America (DGA), the Producer’s Guild of America (PGA), the Writer’s Guild of America (WGA), the Screen Actors Guild-American Federation of Television and Radio Artists (SAG-AFTRA) and the International Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employees (IATSE).

We’ll be analyzing the history of each state’s incentive programs, what they did to attract projects out of major production states like California and New York and how these incentive programs operate within each state. We’ll also look to determine the effects these programs are having on the film industry, and how the major production states are combating the loss of revenue. Join us on a journey as we discover first-hand the effects of these incentive programs, and how they are shaping the world of modern film and television.
